Monique Le Ster, b. 1946
Monique Le Ster paints on a wide range of materials, which are sometimes combined with needlecraft techniques. Central theme is nature and its interaction with culture. The depiction is abstract and often geometric or figurative with flowers. Suited to the subject matter, she chooses to work exclusively with natural pigments. Her work has two forms: free-hanging tapestries in large dimensions and work in a frame the smallest dimension of which is 50 x 50 cm.
Next to her career in fashion and textiles, Le Ster has always drawn and painted. Since 1992 she has concentrated on painting and assembling works of art in her own studio. It is located in an old parsonage in a village at the foot of the French Pyrenees. A place that inspires consideration and reflection and perfectly suits Le Ster's interest in psychology and philosophy.
Monique Le Ster uses only natural, non-synthetic materials. Used materials are often reused and given a new lease of life as a work of art (compare Arte povera). Linen and jute, among others, are processed until the texture (creased, layered) satisfies. Then the application of a mix of natural pigments and binding agents starts, sometimes alternated with chalk, charcoal and ink.
The sturdy structure and subtle colour action intrigue and give Le Ster's tapestries and paintings something sensual. Texture, colour and shape reflect a sensitive perception of natural matter, "raw materials". Le Ster is fascinated by the way in which mainly plants, minerals and rock conjure up the multiplicity and cycles in Nature. A favourite motive is the hibiscus.
