Ursula Jaeger, b. 1935
Ursula Jaeger designs and weaves linen tapestries. Her free work is mostly abstract, seldom has real perspective and is created in thematic series. In addition to commissions from private individuals and architects, she make religiously inspired work for churches (paraments and altar cloths). Jaeger's tapestries can be hung freely on the wall, but they can also be framed in a frame or framework. In the mixed techniques (weaving with non-textile material) there is mainly work in small to medium-size dimensions. The hand-woven tapestries are usually medium-sized to large.
In 2005 Ursula Jaeger celebrated her 50th anniversary as a gobelin weaver. She received the Auguste Papendieck prize in 1990 and the Focke Museum in Bremen, Germany, dedicated a publication to her work. Themes are Ancient Cultures, Biblical stories, Nature and Communication between people. These subjects are reflected in series such as Letters, Travels, Magical Canvases and Play. The chosen form is often innovative, not only because of the technical finds, such as weaving with water colour or painted veneer, but also because of the modernisation of the age-old image language of gobelins. The warp and weft contribute to the whole, as Lucio Fontana with his prepared canvas tooled with a knife.
From the year 2000, tapestries were created with the theme "Spiel Art", which were inspired by a scattered deck of cards, pieces of a puzzle, blowing bubbles, paper boats, games boards and other elements of play. The intention is to evoke pleasure in the game. The colour scheme, which reminds of figures of play, also contributes to this.
