Rare tapestries by Johanna Schütz-Wolff for sale
For the first time in over 50 years, a number of monumental tapestries from the German artist Johanna Schütz-Wolff (1896-1965) are offered for sale. These tapestries come straight from the artist's estate. These are the last large tapestries that are still with the heirs. The others were destroyed by the artist herself under the Nazi-regime or lost otherwise. A limited number of tapestries belongs to museums and institutions.
Johanna Schütz-Wolff was a versatile artist who worked mainly with graphics and textiles. She founded the textiles studio in Halle, where an artistic course was sailed that differed from the Bauhaus. Around 1925, she broke through. Her participation in exhibitions important to modern art ended abruptly in 1933 as a result of the assumption of power by the Nazis. After 1945 she stepped back into the limelight with participations including the Triennale di Milano (1954) and the Biennale di Venezia (1958). In 1965 she died, barely 69 years old.
